ISO 29862 / EN 1939 Self-Adhesive Tapes: Determination of Peel Adhesion Properties

ISO 29862 superceded EN 1939 in 2019 and includes four methods used to measure the comparative peel adhesion properties of self-adhesive tapes to stainless steel, backing material, transfer tapes, and liners. This standard calls out a 180-degree peel angle at ambient temperature, but includes annexes for testing at a 90-degree peel angle as well as at low temperatures.

These test methods are used for quality control, specifically for testing to see if a roll of adhesive meets internal acceptance criteria. Tape adhesives are used in many industries, from packaging to automotive manufacturing to producing consumer products. ISO 29862 can be used to evaluate the relative bond strength of a given tape to one or more surfaces as compared to a standard stainless steel panel.

Materials Testing System

For peel tests, it is critical to use a high data acquisition rate to ensure all test events are represented in the results. Too low of a bandwidth may fail to capture peaks and troughs and “dull” the results, leading to artificially low peel strength values.Kason’s test frames enable a data capture rate of up to 2.5kHz, and with the Universal Advanced Performance option, data acquisition rate can be increased to 5 kHz. When choosing a test frame, system capacity will depend on the strength of the adhesive, but most tests to ISO 29862 fall in the 1 kN and 5 kN capacity range, making this application perfect for a single column Series test frame.

Grips

Pneumatic side action grips and advanced screw side action grips are optimal for ISO 29862. Both types of grips are adjustable in order to offset the jaw faces and ensure the specimen remains centered in the grips. They both feature quick-change jaw faces that can be easily changed to accommodate different substrate materials.
